Bikeability is based on the government approved National Standards for cycle training. Organised by West Berkshire Council, it is delivered at schools by qualified Bikeability Instructors who are fully insured and DBS checked.

Please read through the following information carefully. To take part in the training, your child must be able to ride a bike competently and must have ridden within the last two months. They must have a fully road-worthy bike which is the correct size for them, not too small or too big.

The bike MUST have two working brakes, tyres in good condition (tread and no punctures) and the bike must not have any stunt pegs or similar attached. The handlebars MUST have end plugs in place for the rider’s safety.

A check of the following will help ensure your child can take part:

Air – are the tyres fully pumped up?

Brakes – are the front and back brakes working properly?

Chain – has the chain been oiled recently?

Are the handlebars and saddle tight and pointing in the right direction?

The instructor delivering the training will have the final say as to whether your child’s bike is considered safe. The instructor will not have time to make repairs or adjustments. Your child will not be able to take part in the training if they deem your child’s bike is unsafe to either the rider or others taking part. If it is necessary to defer your child’s training, your child will be given a form by the instructor indicating the issue with the bike.

We really don’t want to disappoint any child so if in ANY doubt please get it checked by a qualified bike mechanic.

Your child’s safety is our priority!

Your child must also have a cycle helmet that fits them correctly. Full-face (BMX style) helmets are not permitted as children cannot hear the instructors clearly or hear approaching traffic on the road.

While your child is being instructed, we expect to have their full attention. If they do not listen to the instructors, they may miss vital information that will keep them safe.

The children will be instructed in all weathers. Training will only be cancelled if it is not safe to continue. Your child must wear suitable clothing, we advise closed-toe shoes (no sandals or flip-flops), a waterproof coat, and gloves in colder weather.

By registering for this course you are consenting to the following conditions:

I agree to my child taking part in the cycle training as outlined above.

My child is at least 10 years old in this academic year.

My child can competently ride a bike and has ridden within the last two months.

I agree to provide a fully road-worthy bike which is the correct size for them, not too small or too big.

I have completed an ABC check on my child’s bike as identified here: https://bikeability.org.uk/bikeability-training/get-ready/

The bike MUST have two working brakes, tyres in good condition (tread and no punctures) and the bike must not have any stunt pegs or similar attached. The handlebars MUST have end plugs in place for the rider’s safety.

I agree to provide / fit bike lights for the session if the weather is of low visibility to ensure my child can be seen by other road users.

I will provide a suitable cycle helmet for my child. This will be in good condition, fit correctly (not too big or too small), and have no visible damage.

I acknowledge that the instructors can refuse to train my child if they deem his/her cycle to be un-roadworthy. I accept that it is my responsibility to ensure my child has a roadworthy bike (see information above). I will get the bike checked over by a qualified cycle mechanic if I am unsure. I accept that the instructor’s decision is final regarding the roadworthiness of the bike.

I have provided all medical, educational or behavioural information that the instructors need to be aware of at the time of booking. I take full responsibility to provide any updates as necessary before my child attends the course.

I accept that an instructor has the right to end training with my child should their ability to ride, their behaviour or their medical fitness not be deemed safe to continue. This decision will only be taken where absolutely necessary and is for the safety of your child and that of others around them.

·        West Berkshire Council will not be responsible for any injury or disease transmission or be liable for any loss or damage to participants’ cycles and other belongings.

·        I understand that rider characteristics data collected will be used to support the delivery and monitoring of training sessions/courses, see  www.bikeability.org.uk/privacy-policy/  for further details.

·        I understand that if my child is taking part in Bikeability Level 3, they must have completed a route plan prior to attending the course.

·        I agree to encourage my child to practice between each session and after the completion of training – this will prepare them for independent travel as they move onto secondary school.

·        I agree to pay the nominal fee of £10 for my child to attend the course and understand if they do not attend the full course costs may be chargeable. We do not want cost to be a barrier to accessing any of our courses, please do speak to your child’s school if payment is an issue.

·        I confirm that I have read all the information enclosed and consent to taking cycling lessons and related activities, which may include cycle maintenance as well as riding on the public highway.

I am happy for my child to be photographed and/or filmed to help promote the course.
